This day is held to commemorate the former Abbots of the Buddhapadipa Temple who dedicated their lives to work for the propagation of the Buddha’s teachings.
In 1964, two Thai monks, Phra Chodok Yanasiddhi and Phramaha Vicit Tissadatto, were invited to teach insight meditation at Buddhavihara Hampstead, London. In the same year, The Thai community living in the UK settled on a plan to found a Thai temple. As such, with the community’s generosity, a temple was founded in 1965 at 99 Christ Church Road, Richmond. The King of Thailand gave it the name “The Buddhapadipa Temple” (meaning The Light of the Buddha).
In 1975, the temple was relocated to its present site, 14 Calonne Road, Wimbledon, London SW19 5HJ. Since then the temple has remained opened to the public and continues to grow and develop.
In order to show gratitude to the former Abbots of the Buddhapapipa Temple, The Young Buddhist Group and The Lay Buddhist Association have great pleasure in announcing that the “Former Abbots Day” will be held at the Buddhapadipa Temple, 14 Calonne Road, Wimbledon, London SW19 5HJ.
All are cordially welcome to take part in the commemoration ceremony and make merit.
