Meditation Practice at the Temple

Introduction | Dates and Times

Meditation practice makes up an important part of what goes on regularly at the temple. It is taught four times a week, on a Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm until around 8:45pm and on a Saturday and Sunday at 4pm until 5:45pm.The classes are taught in English and both walking and sitting meditation are covered. More advanced meditators practice separately.

The sittings begin in the traditional Theravadin style with simple preliminary chanting of homage to the ‘Triple Gem’ and taking of the three refuges followed by the five precepts. The chanting is by no means compulsory, although there are books available for those who wish to join in.
After the sitting has ended meditators are invited back to the main house for tea and coffee and a Dhamma discussion. This is a good opportunity to ask any questions one might have regarding Buddhism or meditation.

As well as the weekly sittings, there are also regular one day and week long retreats held in the temple grounds. The one day retreats are held on the first Saturdays of each month and begin at 9am with a break for lunch at noon from 1:00 and finish at 5:00pm (Please check the date below). There is no need book to attend the one day retreat, however, for beginners, it would be advisable to attend at least a few classes beforehand.

The week long retreats take place in the Spring, Summer and the Winter but obviously the dates will change each year so please check the programme.
