Can And Cannot Do

Written by Dhammacaro on 06/14/2009

When we are going to do something, one idea usually arises in our mind, “We can do or cannot do”. We don’t have confidence and encouragement. Without confidence and encouragement, we gradually convinced ourselves, "I cannot do it!" There is an inspiring story which may give us an idea why “can and cannot” happen. Here is the story;

During the first weeks of school, a boy was sitting in mathematics class gazing out the window when the teacher asked him, "What's the answer?"

"What's the answer?" He didn't even know the question! He was speechless. His face turned red, panic and fearful! At that moment he told himself, "I hate mathematics!" After school, he went back home and his mother asked him, "How was school?" He said, "I couldn't answer the math’s question." And Mother said, "Relax - no one in our family can do mathematics!"

Suddenly he breathed a huge sigh of relief ... "Of course I hate multiplication! It's in my genes!" The next day he told his friends about that, "I hate mathematics. My entire family is bad with numbers!" and said, "Why make an effort? I'll never conquer it. I cannot do it!".

But what REALLY happened here? We got a bad start and fell behind. We don’t have confidence and encouragement. Maybe this mathematics story didn't happen to us. But most of us have our own story - about singing, playing football, drawing a picture, public speaking ... etc.

We got a bad start and fell behind. We don’t have confidence and no one comes along to encourage us. After one embarrassing experience, we end up with the thought, “I cannot do it!”. We must fix this idea “Can and cannot do”. It’s worth asking ourselves, "Where did I get this idea? Is it really a fact?" When we have fixed the idea “Can and Cannot do”, we can give ourselves a second chance, be confident, get some help, and start again; very often WE CAN DO IT! If we are given an answer, how we will ever learn. Is it right?
