Your Life Will Change When You Change

Written by Dhammacaro on 01/03/2010

I have been asked the question “How can I change my life? When can I change my life?” I reply to this question, “Your life will change when you change it”. It is true. Who else can change you if you don’t change yourself. Your life will not change when your boss changes; when your friends change; when your parents change; when your husband or wife changes; when your company changes; when your church changes; when your location changes; when your money changes; or when your status changes. But your life will change when you are ready to change it.

To gain more understanding, there is a story which supports this view well. Here is the story:

There was once a student who tried to study hard, but he did not succeed in his study. He approached his teacher and asked for help, “How can I make progress in my studies? Can you help me?” The teacher said to him that he knew who could help him. The student was interested to know who specifically could help him. The teacher said to him, “Come and see”. And he followed his teacher to the next room. In the room, his teacher pointed at a mirror. When he looked in the mirror, he saw himself. Then the teacher said, “The one who is in the mirror can help you”. “It’s me!”, he exclaimed. “Yes, you are the one. Who else can help you if you don’t help yourself? If you don’t try? And if you don’t change yourself, who else can change you?” insisted the teacher. He looked at himself in the mirror and reflected on the teacher’s words. And then he said to himself in the mirror, “It is me who can change my life!”.

Yes, it is true. Although as we can see in our own life, we might gain some inspiration from others, in the end we have to change, or do it by ourselves. Whatever it is that we want to do, or want to be, we have to learn to build our life around that. We can make our life different by observing and watching ourselves. Don't be afraid to face reality during your life. Even if there are difficulties, impossibilities and losses. When we see the weakness of life, we must be brave enough to change it for the better.

Remember! There is only you who is capable of changing your life.
