Kathina & Loykratong Festival 2013
On Sunday 17th November Buddhapadipa Temple held its annual Kathina and Loykratong festival. The weather was kind to us as the programme commenced in the main temple at 9-30am with the offering of the Kathina robe to the Sangha by His Excellency the Ambassador of Thailand. This was followed by Pali chanting from the Honourable monks.
Outside the Thai food stalls offered their delicious dishes to the many visitors that attended the celebrations. There were also many other stalls with their variety of produce to be purchased.
At 1pm the Thai cultural show was opened with a speech from The Commander of Wimbledon police, to whom we give our thanks.
This show continued with Thai dance, classical and regional. Talented musicians performed their music for us, again both classical and modern. There was a display of Thai boxing and martial arts. Then there was the beauty contest, Miss Noppamus, which for many is the highlight of the show.
As darkness approached we saw the glow from the Kratongs floating on the lake, their candles flickering and the incense filling the evening air with a sweet aroma, this bought the day to a close.
It was an enjoyable day for all who attended. Thank you for coming and see you again next festival, which is the new year day 1st January.
