Dhamma-Mirror

Written by Dhammacaro on 02/15/2009

Dhamma is a phenomenon which is comparable to a reflector of human mind. Dhamma also means nature which reflects itself as it really reveals. There is neither explanation nor reason for nature, for instance, why is it cold today? The answer is nature; it is nature of winter, the weather must be cold. And it is the same of the other weathers.

Another example is that Dhamma is a mirror that will reflect absolutely any object which comes before its surface; it will not refuse any object, and all are equally accepted. There exists no distinction between good and evil, beauty and ugliness for the mirror. The mirror reflects things as canyons and rivers, in the same way it will reflect a tiny insect. This is equality of acceptance, there exits no value judgment, only the object reflected. The mirror sees the mountain as a mountain, and the ocean as an ocean, it accepts things as they are without changing. The mirror never keeps or sticks to an image after the object is removed. It returns to its peaceful state ready to reflect anything that comes, not attached to anything.

It is true that Dhamma does not distinguish or judge things, it just reveals as it really is. What people say good or bad, right or wrong, it is just conventional language to help mankind to understand the phenomenon of things. It should not take it in other way. Dhamma is pure as it really is. It doesn’t mix with anything such as good or bad. It is like a mirror, we should cultivate our mind like a mirror!
