Beautiful Day

Written by Dhammacaro on 06/30/2009

It is nice day in summer time. Nice and warm. Every day should be beautiful for us. Indeed, it should. How do we make our day beautiful? It is an interesting question and there is a good answer for it. If we have a positive attitude when we begin our day then every day will be beautiful for us. Let me give an example by way of this story called, “Today is a beautiful day”.

There was once a blind man sitting on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said "I am blind, please help". There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then asked the blind man to change the sign. The blind man was surprised with the stranger and said to him, “Sir, please tell me what words you would like me to write?” The man said, "Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it", and added, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way". The blind man agreed with the man. He turned around the sign and wrote the new words. After he had finished writing, he put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind man. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The blind man recognized his footsteps and said a big thank to him, "Thank you very much indeed, you changed my day to be beautiful day".

What the meaning of the story conveys is that if we change our attitude towards each day we face, every day will be beautiful for us. And what of the meaning of the first sign and the second sign? Were they saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the man was blind. But the first sign simply said the man was blind. The second sign was more effective because it told people they were so lucky that they were not blind and they could see the beautiful day. How is your day? Is it beautiful?
